Summer so far

It’s Summer!  We moved back into our house in Mt. Lebanon.  We moved back at the end of March.

The boys just started Mother’s Day Out once a week so 3 hours to myself once a week!  You can’t do much in 3 hours.  Once you account for driving home and then driving back to pick up, it’s really only 2.5 hours, but better than nothing.

But it leaves very little time for blogging or sewing.  Sam doesn’t nap anymore (and hasn’t for a long time) so I don’t have nap time anymore.

Tucker will be 2 at the end of September and Sam will be 4 in August!

We just booked a quick trip to Florida for July.  Just 3 nights!  My sister-in-law is turning 30 so I was going to go by myself to celebrate with her but since Aaron had to take off work anyway to watch the boys, they just decided to come too!

Other than that trip, we don’t have any vacation on the horizon.  I kind of wish we were taking a week long beach trip like everyone else on Facebook but that’s kind of hard with Aaron’s job.  Maybe next year?  Not that I’m a beach person but a week long vacation would be fun.

Sam and I are starting to go a little stir crazy in the afternoons.  Tucker is a really good napper, which is awesome, but that means were stuck home all afternoon, every afternoon.

Yesterday I took the boys to the South Side to play in the fountains.  Except Sam doesn’t really like spraying water and it turned out that Tucker was sick.  So it didn’t go over so well.

Here’s Tucker later in the day being a poor, sick baby.

We’ve been making lots of these chocolate popsicles with our 99 cent Ikea popsicle molds.

And we finally threw in the towel with our oven that has caused problems since the day we got it.  Out with the old and in with the new.  I got this LG one this time and so far it’s awesome!!

As for sewing, I have about 20 things that I really want to make but the only time I have to do it is Sundays and evenings after the kids go to bed.  And when 8:30 rolls around and the kids are finally in bed, the last thing I feel like doing is sewing.

I just saw this awesome fabric at Spool.  It’s cotton chambray.  I want to make a shirt out of it for myself.  Plus they have paper airplane printed cotton!

Alright, time to go bring clothes in from the line outside.  I love how line dried clothes smell.

Back to Pittsburgh

We’re back from Florida!  Did I even mention that we were going? The boys and I went to Florida without Aaron for 5 days to visit my parents.  I got sunburnt.  Oops.  I don’t typically get sunburnt so this was surprising.  Of course the boys were completely covered in spf 50 so they’re good.

We had a fun time!  And we missed the last bit of awful weather in Pittsburgh.  Sam and I just cut the grass this afternoon while Tucker napped and now he’s watching Inside Out for the millionth time this week.

We’re going to have BLTs for dinner tonight and soup.  We took a family trip to Trader Joe’s last night to get groceries since we had pretty much nothing.  I have no idea what Aaron ate while we were gone.  We spent $243!  That’s a lot for us!  Aaron got some groceries of his own for lunches at work plus I planned 5 dinners to make.

We’re going to have:

Tuesday: BLTs on sourdough with roasted red pepper and tomato soup

Wednesday: Grilled chicken salads with hard boiled eggs & roasted sweet potatoes

Thursday: Chicken fajita pasta skillet

Friday: out

Saturday: hamburgers on homemade rolls & roasted broccoli

Thumbprint Cookies & The Weekend

It’s Monday!  Friday night we went out to dinner.  Saturday, Aaron left early to go work on our house in the North Side so I took the boys to the Waterfront because we had a couple errands to run.  We took a walk on the trail there and then played with the hola hoops.

Saturday evening we went to a wedding so my in-laws watched the boys.  The wedding was fun!  We were seated with a bunch of my second cousins who didn’t even remember me because they’re all like 10 years younger than me!  I have quite a few second cousins.  Also, I used to babysit the girl who got married.

I wore a red dress.  I wouldn’t say I’m a huge fan of bright colors.  However, I am a fan of off the shoulder straps.  Two people asked me if I made the dress.  I did not.  Someday maybe.  Right now, lining things like this seems to be over my skill level.imag9732_25103589254_o

Sunday was pretty uneventful.  Aaron took the boys to breakfast and I did a bit of sewing and thinking about the fact that we’re moving in two weeks and haven’t started packing yet.

I made these thumbprint cookies  from Brown Eyed Baker (she’s a Pittsburgh blogger) for the wedding cookie table.  I followed the recipe almost exactly except I added a little extra milk to the dough because it seemed a little dry. (This may have been because I use vanilla bean paste instead of regular vanilla extract.) But they were really good!  I didn’t have any dutch process cocoa so I used Hershey’s Special Dark which was surprisingly good.  Regular Hershey’s cocoa powder is not good.

Also, I didn’t take them out midway through baking and press the indentation again like the recipe said.

I bought blue sprinkles in the bulk bins at the grocery store.  I doubled the recipe for the dough and the frosting and it made exactly 6 dozen.  Apparently thumbprints are a Pittsburgh thing?  I had no idea.  But definitely make these!  Thumbprints are my favorite cookies. Mainly I like frosting.  And sprinkles.  So sugar.  I like sugar.

I read quite a few blogs.  A lot of them post “day in the life” posts every once in a while and I always like them.  So I kept track of most of our day today to thrill you with the excitement of it!

Here we go.

7:10 AM – Sam wakes up and comes into our room.  I pretend he’s not there until about 7:20.

7:20 AM – I get out of bed, make coffee.  Sam and I go into the living room while Aaron gets ready for work.

7:30 AM – Aaron leaves for work.  I drink coffee while Sam watches “Sid the Science Kid” on his Kindle.

7:40 AM – I hear Tucker waking but leave him in the crib while I drink coffee and think about what to do today.  (we have nothing scheduled wednesdays)

8 AM – Get Tucker out of the crib.  Change his diaper and get him some milk.  Make the boys French toast for breakfast, unload the dishwasher.  Strap Tucker into the high chair and leave the boys to eat while I get dressed and gather our stuff for the day.  (decided to go on the Hike it Baby hike in Frick Park)

8:30 AM – Clean up breakfast.  Eat my own breakfast.  Get the kids dressed and ready.  Play a while. Make beds.

9:40 AM – Leave for Frick Park.  Hike (used loosely) for about an hour then go to the playground for a while.  Enjoy being outside and feeling warm for the first time in months.

12 PM – Drive home.  Try to feed Tucker lunch but he won’t eat anything.  (he had a bunch of snacks at the park)

12:15 PM – Put Tucker down for a nap.  That’s really early for him but he’s still recovering from his sickness.

12:15-1:15PM – Institute quiet time for Sam and me.  I waste time on the internet, Sam watches more Sid the Science Kid

1:15 PM – Sam and I go outside with the monitor while Tucker continues to nap.  He rides his bike around, digs in the dirt, plays with an umbrella.  I clean all the junk out of my car then sit on the porch while Sam plays.imag9656_25281849289_oimag9663_25354267550_o

2:30 PM – come inside.  Tucker is still napping.  Sam plays with some legos then eats bread with butter which is his favorite thing to eat.  Peanut butter and jelly is a close second.  I make a couple phone calls about moving and fold some laundry.  Sam does some painting.

4 PM – Tucker is up!  Lonnnng nap for him.  I get him out of the crib.  He eats a banana and I start to get us ready to drive to the South Hills.  We slowly get ready and then leave at 5.

5 PM – Drive to the South Hills.  Sit in traffic forever while Tucker says “car car car” repeatedly and Sam says “Why are we stopped?  Why are we going slow?  Is there a red light?  What is traffic? Why don’t we go faster?”

5:40 PM – Pick up Chipotle for dinner and then drive to Dormont to look at a house.  Aaron meets us there at about 6:20.

6:20 PM – Go look at a house for sale to possibly live in or possibly buy as an investment or possibly for no real purpose at all other than we like to look at houses.  Wander around Dormont for a while then drive home.  Sam falls asleep in the car…

7 PM – Get home.  Try to convince the kids to eat some of their dinner that they refused to eat earlier.  Play

7:40 PM – not bath night for the boys so we put them in pajamas and do the bed time thing.

8:10 PM – boys in bed.  Aaron gets changed and heads to the Troy Hill house to work on it.

8:15 PM – I clean up the house then take a shower.  Then I put on music, sit on the couch and start typing this.

9:30 PM – Read/look at things online then I’ll probably go to bed around 11

The Weekend

It’s Monday! Sam had swim class this morning.

Poor Tucker seems to be sick again so he’s napping early today.

I had my birthday, hotel stay this weekend.  It was very relaxing!  I somehow got sucked into watching three romantic comedies in a row Saturday night.  I don’t even particularly like romantic comedies but I couldn’t stop watching.

Here’s the weekend in some photos:

I did a lot of this:

Ate this breakfast two days in a row.  Didn’t really read the newspaper.  Brought all the tiny jelly bottles home for the boys.imag9541_25405405842_o

Saturday morning I had a massage.  My first one.  It’s kind of a weird thing.

Then I wandered around downtown and reminisced about having a job.  I used to walk through this parking garage a lot.

Picked up Thai food for dinner and bought snacks at Rite Aid Saturday.imag9553_25531720435_o

Sunday I went to the gym and mostly just watched the Travel Channel and took mirror selfies.  Then I went in the Eucalyptus steam room and melted.  I only lasted about 5 minutes in there.

Then the boys came to pick me up and brought me a birthday card! Then we had cupcakes before dinner because we wanted to end the weekend on a wild note.imag9573_25535599356_o

And now it’s Monday! Tucker is napping right now and it’s nice and sunny outside today so Sam and I will probably go out in a few minutes.
